About Us

The association is operated and managed by volunteers elected by residents at the Annual General Meeting.

ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION

Residents started the Bryanfern Residents Association over 20 years ago as a volunteer community organisation focused on protecting the wonderful green belt that runs through the suburb. Since its inception, the association and its members have added numerous other projects to their list, all aimed at building the community and making Bryanfern a safer and more pleasant suburb to live in.

The purpose of the RA is to make the neighbourhood a clean, safe and vibrant area in which to live. It is run by a small team of volunteers who all live in the area and have a personal interest in helping the organisation achieve its aims.

BFRA was legally incorporated as a non-profit company. The association is operated and managed by volunteers elected by residents at the Annual General Meeting.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

The BFRA area encompasses small parts of the large suburbs of Ferndale and Bryanston in the north-west of Johannesburg. There are about 480 households in the area. It is bounded in the north by the N1 and Jacaranda Avenue, in the west by West Avenue, in the south by Oxford Street, and in the east by Kays, Cypress and Vale Avenue, including the Beech and Lime Street crescent. It is mostly green, leafy and residential, with some businesses along Oxford Road and various professional service companies run from homes. There is easy access to the N1 highway via the Malibongwe Drive onramp.

A spruit runs through the BFRA area. It is bordered by an arboretum and bird sanctuary secured in collaboration with the City. We work continuously to protect this precious wild retreat in the very heart of the city, mending fences, cleaning up the river and protecting the area against pollution and invasion. We also organise monthly river hikes that allow residents to experience nature in the city.

SUBURB OVERVIEW

Ferndale is a suburb of Johannesburg. It falls under the region of Randburg, is very central and has a good mix of residential homes, shops and commercial property. Ferndale covers about an area of about 7.7 square kilometres and has a population of about 20,000, according to the 2011 census.

Bryanston is an affluent residential suburb of Sandton and was first named as an area in 1949. Sandton was merged with Johannesburg to form part of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality after the fall of apartheid. Bryanston covers an area of about 24.9 square kilometres and has a population of about 29,000, according to the 2011 census.
